Nutritional Care Strategies for Optimal Growth and Development in the Preterm Infant

Tarah Colaizy, MD, MPH, associate professor of pediatrics-neonatology, at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine in Iowa City, reviews neurodevelopmental consequences of extrauterine growth retardation and nutritional care strategies for avoiding these consequences in the preterm infant. Using a case-based approach, she describes evidence-based practices for preventing undernutrition during the first few weeks of life, as well as appropriate ongoing management to support normal growth and development.

  Tarah Colaizy, MD, MPH, attended medical school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, WI, followed by Pediatric residency and Neonatology fellowship at Oregon Health & Sciences University in Portland, OR.  During fellowship Dr. Colaizy became intrigued with neonatal nutrition, growth, and breastfeeding, and obtained a masters degree in public health to prepare her for a clinical research career in these fields. She became a member of the faculty of the University of Iowa in 2014, and currently holds the rank of Associate Professor with Tenure.  Dr. Colaizy is an active critical care clinician and teacher. She has an active research program in breastfeeding, growth, and neurodevelopmental outcomes of preterm infants fed donor human milk.  She serves as the alternate PI for the Iowa center of the NICHD Neonatal Research Network. She also serves as medical director of the Mother’s Milk Bank of Iowa, a HMBANA member bank.
