Why it matters:

Continuing to support the unique nutrition needs of preterm infants after NICU discharge is critical. Supporting growth trajectories, repleting nutrients, and considering developmental delays are some of the goals of a postdischarge feeding plan. Close monitoring of growth patterns and oral feeding success is vital to identify the need for potential supplementation. Few studies suggest one formula type is beneficial over another, however, evidence is clear that exposure to maternal milk, when possible and as long as possible, results in better growth and health outcomes.
